Seán Duggan

Iceland has so much to offer for photographers, and on this creative and photographic adventure with fine art photographer, educator, and digital imaging expert Seán Duggan, you’ll have the opportunity to make the most of it as we explore this beautiful island during the winter season where snow, ice, incredible light and ever-changing weather transform the spectacular landscapes.

In the past we have run this workshop for 12 people but this time, in order to maximize the experience for participants, we are limiting this workshop to only 6, allowing for a more relaxed pace and ample time for personalized, hands-on instruction. Also the nights before and after the workshop are included in the workshop fee.

Iceland’s position at the edge of the Artic Circle means that there are extended periods of sunrise and sunset that lead to many hours of the “sweet light”, a perfect recipe for landscape photography. When night falls, we’ll venture out in search of a different kind of light, hunting the fascinating and colorful aurora borealis. The excellent Icelandic guides at Focus on Nature (photographers themselves) will take care of all the details and logistics, track the weather, and make sure that we’re at the right places at the perfect times so that your focus can be on enjoying the trip, being creative, making great images, and having a wonderful time.

Iceland is a country with landscapes that are truly stunning in their vastness and beauty and we’ll have an insider’s view, guided by experienced locals, as we seek out the well-known destinations, as well the hidden places and vistas that are rarely seen by the casual visitor. Our time on location will be enhanced with technical demonstrations in the field to help you improve your camera work and compositional skills.

In the times when we are not out photographing, we’ll improve our photography through critique and review sessions of the images we make during the week, discussing what works and what doesn’t and how we can make better photographs. Seán will provide demonstrations of how to improve and enhance your photos using techniques in Lightroom and Photoshop, and transforming a photo through localized adjustments. For those who like to shoot with their iPhone or Android devices, Seán will also share some of his favorite creative camera phone processing techniques. Seán will provide a selection of detailed video tutorials on Lightroom, Photoshop, and mobile processing to each participant as a way to extend the learning experience once you return home.

Both our time out in the beautiful Icelandic landscapes, as well as our sessions working on our images in Lightroom, Photoshop, or mobile apps, are focused on the needs of the individuals in the group and designed to help you get the most from your images and take your technical mastery and creativity to the next level. Live online follow-up sessions are also provided to help you refine your final selection of the best images from the trip.

Stepping out of the familiar world of our daily routines and entering a place so completely different and breathtakingly beautiful, can be a deeply significant creative experience for a photographer. That’s what this trip is all about: journeying to a far off, majestic land for the sole purpose of immersing yourself in your photography and seeking out new creative discoveries.

I hope you’ll join me on what is sure to be an excellent adventure!
