Laurie Excell workshop, August 15 - August 21

Bringing Your Vision to Life / From the Click of the Shutter to the Finishing Touches in the Digital Darkroom

Course Intinerary:

We begin our Iceland Adventure with a quick presentation from your instructor as well as a student intro. Please bring ten images that you feel show your style and skill level for the first evening. It is not a critique but rather a get to know you and where you are photographically to better help you throughout the week. This will give me an idea of where everyone is and I feel is a great way to meet each other both in person and through our images after all, travel and photography is what we all share in common from the outset. We will also go through camera settings to make sure everyone is on the same page from the outset.

Bring to the first evening get together, your camera with one lens that you will want to carry with you to dinner, ten images on a jump drive or CF card…jpeg or tif only please and an enthusiastic attitude for an “Excell”ent Photographic Adventure in Iceland! We will then head out to dinner in Reykjavik with a camera and lens in hand. Everything we see is a new experience so carry a camera with you at all times to record the full story of your visit from the places we stay, your room, the meals we eat, the people we meet, each other, as well as the incredible landscape that we will visit.

Each day will begin with a sunrise shoot on location followed by some time to download images and go through the workflow process followed by and evening shoot. Weather permitting, this will be the basic schedule for the week. However, keep in mind that at a moment’s notice, plans can be subject to change. As your instructor, I want to give you the best opportunities to photograph the wonders of Iceland as well as time spent reviewing images and understanding what makes a great image vs a been there vacation shot. There will be times where we are in transit to locations. This time will be spent covering in open discussions and any questions you may have.

What to Bring:

I will have in my bag… 2-DSLR bodies (one for backup as well as having a second lens attached for quick changes of lenses) My widest lens (16mm fisheye) to a moderate tele-zoom (70-300mm, 70-200mm with converters, 100-400mm range) 16mm fisheye, 14-24mm 2.8, 24-70mm 2.8, 70-200mm VR or 70-300mm VR, (TC-17E if I bring the 70-200mm VR) 1-flash with off camera cord or wireless setup, one Lastolite reflector/diffuser 30” (or something similar), gels for the flash. Lightweight, sturdy tripod and ballhead. I have a Gitzo GT3541LS and a Really Right Stuff BH-55 ballhead. Shutter Hat or similar rain protection gear to cover your camera if we are out in the rain. A complete list will be provided to each participant in advance of out adventure. I recommend bringing what you will need but, also keeping in mind that traveling light gives you greater mobility and less decisions to make in the field. As your instructor, I will be shooting alongside you. You are welcome to ask to see what I am shooting at any time and I will come around and ask to see what you are shooting too. We will work together to help you with camera settings, creative exposure options and composition. With a small group, everyone will have some one on one time with me to work on the areas you need help with.
