Gudmundur Ingolfsson, Focus on Nature grand assistant. By Einar Erlendsson
|
As Focus On Nature’s creator I enlist professional photographers as assistants to help guide instructors on location in Iceland. They not only need to know the land like the palms of their hands, but also do have the culture and understanding about their role as top quality assistants. Gudmundur Ingolfsson is one of Focus On Nature’s best assistants.

Gudmundur is a veteran photographer. His passion for photography started when he was a young boy. He started learning English by reading photographic magazines. Gudmundur studied photography with Otto Steinert at Folkwangschule für Gestaltung in Essen, Germany, in 1968-1971, and was his assistant for a time. Since 1972 he has run his studio “Imynd” (in English, image; figure; epitome) and has taken photographs of all kinds, but especially for advertisements and the theatre. Gudmundur is one of Iceland’s best-known photographers. His work has been widely published, and exhibited in many shows.

John Paul Caponigro described his experience with Gudmundur during his workshop in Iceland with Focus On Nature 2008 as follows:
So what do you talk about for two 16-hour days while driving through the stunningly varied and complex landscape of Iceland? Susan Sontag and Roland Barthes. Eliot Porter, and Joel Sternfield. View cameras and CCDs. Climate change and vulcanology. Jim Jarmusch and Aki Kourismaki. Vivaldi and Dave Brubeck. You know light conversation. The funny thing is we were always laughing. Gudmundur’s drove us in his modified desert exploration vehicle, an old orange rig high enough to go across rivers and rugged enough to go over volcano beds lying between glaciers. We never would have gone to the places we went without his able guidance. When locals share their experiences you learn, experience and share more. My advice? Get to know the locals. And have fun doing it! You might make great friends.

Gudmundur describes himself as follows:
I am one of the very old guys. Brought up on Tri-X and Brovira. Digital is just for moneymaking; film is used to take photographs. In my old age the f... photo-industry forced computers on me and made me learn my trade anew. They say it is good training to prevent Alzheimer's or so sounds their best excuse.

Above anything else.
Personally I have known Gudmundur for 30 years. He is wealth of knowledge, weather it is about photography, nature, culture or history. It is a pleasure to travel with him and I trust no one better to guide and take well care of each and everyone in my Focus On Nature workshops groups.
