Focus on Nature interview with Eddie Tapp. By Einar Erlendsson
|
Q: Have you ever been to Iceland before Eddie?
A: No…
Q: What is your idea of the nature?
A: Cold, Icy, Green…
Q Is it something you look forward to seeing in Iceland?
A: The land, the people, breath the air, explore…
Q: What do you think about the long twilight zone in Iceland?
A: I love twilight as it yields. Sweet Light… something we have too little of in this part of the earths hemisphere…
Q: Do you feel that your Iceland workshop will be different in some way to your normal workshops?
A: Most certainly… evaluating one’s inner and creative experiences in creating what I might consider, spiritual compositions. That is learning to “feel” the compositional structure as you create the image from the start right through the finish. This is something one develops over time. My hope is to accelerate this inner core with my students by sharing my experiences, evaluating and sharing their experiences through images.
Q: What’s your teaching style?
A: I will mostly challenge you to create something that is at the next level for your experiences with direction and style. Once you have developed your challenge, your vision, I am there to help you step by step if needed in a very patient, easy-going style and when it comes to Photoshop and learning the nuances of digital imaging, I will lay the lines, show specific techniques, help you set new standards in image quality… and you’ll find me un-intimidating and fun to work with.

Q: What do you like most about teaching?
A: Being able to have a positive influence in someone’s love of photography. I recently gave a presentation to a High School in New Jersey… shortly after, I received a folder full of hand written letters from nearly 100 students thanking me for specific parts of my presentation. This is certainly the most rewarding experience of my career as an educator.
Q: What are your students mostly likely to learn? A: Learning to “see the light” will change someone’s life for ever… develop a new sense for creating the mood of the image through compositional elements, and how to obtain superior digital quality from capture through the processes using Adobe Photoshop.
Q: When the weather gets challenging what are you most likely to do? (Stay inside and spend a day on teaching, criticism and discussions or go out and use the weather as a challenge)
A: Most certainly… BOTH..!!!
Q: What characteristic do you feel will be of importance for participants to nurture and develop staying with you out in the Iceland workshop, that should last in their images?
A: Developing a style that is their own with a new lease on Light, Composition and Exposure.
Q: Should your students prepare in some way before the workshop?
A: Bring images for review, have Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 2 loaded along with tripod, camera, and accessories.
Q: How would you describe your photographic approach?
A: Learn the technical aspects and then move into a more spiritual appreciation.
Q: How would you characterize your visual style?
A: Interesting, compelling, stunning, work in progress, good, cliff hanging and satisfying.
Q: Do you ask your self-questions in the field to feel passion or gesture or mood that inspires you?
A: Only when I get technical… usually the elements in front of me generate the passion and inspirations…
Q: Do you have a personal concept or future project in mind before you travel to a place like Iceland?
A: No, I take one day at a time… I love what I do and am blessed to be able to do it… each day is a new experience and a new blessing…
Thank you Eddie for taking your time.
